Set in the East Village of New York City, Rent is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today. Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Rent has become a pop cultural landmark with songs that rock and a story that resonates.
Based loosely on Puccini’s La Boheme, Jonathan Larson’s Rent follows a year in the life of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS.
The physical and emotional complications of the disease pervade the lives of Roger, Mimi, Tom and Angel. Maureen deals with her chronic infidelity through performance art; her partner, Joanne, wonders if their relationship is worth the trouble. Benny has sold out his Bohemian ideals in exchange for a hefty income and is on the outs with his former friends. Mark, an aspiring filmmaker, feels like an outsider to life in general.
How these young bohemians negotiate their dreams, loves and conflicts provides the narrative thread to this groundbreaking musical.
This CMT Mainstage production features a cast of talented performers, ages 14-20.

Today’s scheduled performers on the Montgomery Theater stage: Benny Green, David Benoit Quartet.
San Jose Jazz Summer Fest, formerly known as the San Jose Jazz Festival, is emblematic of the Silicon Valley start-up spirit. The first San Jose Jazz Festival took place in 1990 over two days in August at the Plaza de César Chavez. Its first day focused on fusion and its second day was dedicated to straight-ahead jazz, attracting about 10,000 attendees. This was a true grassroots effort, with the main festival organizers cleaning up festival grounds well after the last notes had been played in the park.
Festival Director Bruce Labadie funded the first two festivals out-of-pocket, and luckily the gamble paid off. Ever since, the plaza has remained the festival’s epicenter and is now the Main Stage centerpiece. Through the ’90s, the festival’s expansion made it the largest free jazz festival in the United States, and the new millennium has seen the event grow to include nearly 1,000 musicians on 12 stages.
Today’s Scheduled Performers:
- 7pm: Benny Green – Solo Piano
- 9pm: David Benoit Quartet (pictured)

Parvati and Parameshwara, Shiva and Sati, Masculine and Feminine, Purusha and Prakruti — are the many names that describe this mystery of creation.
Through Vedanta, we realise that all of this universe is an embodiment of Ishwara. Shiva and Parvati represent the unmanifest and the manifest in the world around us. The puranas reference the physical manifest forms of Shiva and Parvati as symbolic representations of this philosophy, attributing human qualities and emotions to relate trivial, often humorous interactions between them.
The stories ultimately carry the idea of both of them representing all of creation, but in the manifest forms often not realizing it.
Ishwara is a journey of human emotion, love, loss and realization through the eyes of Shiva and Parvati.

Dread Mar I is a charting, best-selling Argentine reggae singer, songwriter and bandleader. His sensual, passionate vocal delivery ranges over a style that combines deep roots reggae with the sweetness of lovers rock.
Dread was born Mariano Javier Castro in Quequén, Argentina in January of 1978. When he was seven years old, his family moved to Maipú, a suburb of Buenos Aires. His first professional gig was as lead singer of the Reggae Messengers. After three years, Dread put together a band and went solo. His debut album Jah Guia was initially issued independently, but garnered wide attention when a couple of enterprising DJs decided to play it. His gigs got larger and soon the major labels came calling. Sony/BMG signed him and reissued Jah Guia across Latin America in 2006. Sales were better than anyone expected.
He was asked by renowned reggae big band Los Cafres to be a stable opener for them (and sing in their backing chorus), including a massive show at Luna Park, which greatly expanded the singer’s profile. Later that year, he and his band performed at the first annual Bob Marley Day festival at Luna Park with the Wailers and Peter Tosh Band. Working with Los Cafres and headlining his own gigs had their advantages; because of the attention — and the money — he was able to record a second album with his own band, Los Guerreros del Rey. It was released in 2007. The following year, with the release of the album Amor-es, Dread became an in-demand attraction. He played 70-plus shows nationally and toured abroad as well. By the time he released Viví en Do in 2010, he was the most popular reggae singer in Argentina, and had established an international following that reached across most of Latin America.
His reputation also extended into the Caribbean: 2011’s Tranquilo was a collaborative album with no less a talent than Jamaica’s Luciano. With his new backing band, Warriors of the King, he took his show to Mexico and the United States. In late 2011 and early 2012, Dread worked at Panda and TAMS studios and delivered Transparente, a record that took him onto the streaming charts in the reggae, tropical and Latin categories. It also revealed his increasing studio savvy — he mixed it himself. Its success also made his Luna Park shows all but impossible to get into; tickets sold out months in advance.
He went back to the studio and issued the hit single “Nada” (backed by a Jamaican chorus) in early 2014. He followed it with the video single “No Te Asustes Ahora”, which netted hundreds of thousands of views in its first weeks on YouTube. As a result, the 17-song full-length En el Sendero went gold.
In 2016, Dread celebrated his tenth anniversary as a recording artist with a show at the massive El Planetario in Palermo, Buenos Aires. The price of admission was donations of food, clothing or cash for the homeless. An expansive audio-video package entitled 10 Anos — featuring both new and catalog songs as well as a documentary — was released and climbed the streaming and download charts. The recording also featured the studio track “Hoja en Blanco”, a revisioned vallenato standard. A demo version of it appeared on the artist’s Facebook page and garnered over five million views.

![Ramon Ayala @ San Jose Civic | 135 West San Carlos Street, San Jose, CA 95113 | United States](https://sanjosetheaters.org/wp-content/uploads/RamonAyala_SJC_Press_200x200.jpg)
Ramon Ayala — born in Monterrey, Mexico — has mastered the artistry of being an accordionist/vocalist/songwriter for over forty years. He has defined norteño music with signature songs and definitive instrumental styling that have made him a superstar on both sides of the El Rio Grande.
As a teenager in the early sixties, Ramon virtually invented modern conjunto music, teaming up with the late bajo sexto guitarist/vocalist Cornelio Reyna to form Los Relampagos del Norte. The duo forged a distinctive sound and compiled a roster of songs that have since been covered by countless artists in contemporary Latin music. Their first hit single “Ya no llores” was recorded in 1963.
For the next eight years, Los Relampagos del Norte tore up the music charts by revolutionizing and re-inventing norteño music, a genre that was then considered exclusively cantina music. The talented duo recorded a total of twenty albums, creating many classics.
After Cornelio Reyna left to pursue his own ranchero career in 1971, Ramon Ayala set out to prove that he could make it on his own and formed the legendary band, Ramon Ayala y sus Bravos del Norte in late 1971. Together, Ramon and Eliseo Robles forged a partnership and created a style that became the standard for norteño music. During the Eliseo Robles years, Ramon Ayala y sus Bravos del Norte’s album sales reached peak high in Mexico and the United States with hits such as: “Un rinconcito en el cielo”, “Chaparra de mi amor”, “Tragos amargos” and many others.
Ramon has won and has been nominated for several Grammy awards. In 2001, Ramon was awarded with an American Grammy award for the album En Vivo… El Hombre Y Su Musica. Ramon has also been awarded with two Latin Grammys’ for the albums Quemame Los Ojos and El Numero Cien. Ramon has been nominated a total of ten times. He has more than 107 albums in his catalogue and he also took part in thirteen movies, sharing credits with talents such as Antonio Aguilar, Los Hermanos Almada and Cornelio Reyna, among others.
Ramon Ayala’s influence on modern music cannot be overstated, as most norteño groups today use their style as their musical foundation to perform their songs.

Presented by Cinema on Stage, an entertainment company dedicated to bringing world-class productions to global audiences, this opulent production brings to life the timeless love story of Prince Salim and courtesan Anarkali, set against the backdrop of the ornate Mughal era.
With over 550 stunning costumes, magnificent sets, live performances of Indian classical singing, and dazzling Kathak choreography, this is the most expensive production in the history of Indian theatre. Produced by Shapoorji Pallonji, the producers of K Asif’s Mughal-E-Azam, and helmed by renowned director Feroz Abbas Khan, this larger-than-life production (with English subtitles) has already captivated audiences at 25 venues across India, the U.S., Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, UAE, Oman and Qatar.
Don’t miss your chance to witness this majestic musical, where love collides with social mores to create a grand symphony of charged emotions, artistry, musicality, lyricism and breathtaking choreography.
Set in the reign of Emperor Akbar, the play infuses new life into the momentous love story of Prince Salim and Anarkali. The passionate and forbidden love between the heir of the Mughal empire and a court dancer throws the royal household into a tumult and brings Emperor Akbar and Prince Salim face to face in a volcanic battle of wills.
The play not only celebrates the artistic legacy of one of the most enduring classics of Indian cinema, but also showcases the syncretic musical and dance traditions of India. Director Feroz Abbas Khan explores class conflicts and gender questions in the play even as he orchestrates war sequences, the regal splendor and cultural richness of the Mughal era, with note-perfect dialogue and sumptuous dance and music sequences.
Watch as a series of dramatic events lead to a tragic climax and a surprise ending that leaves an unanswered question in its wake. At the heart of this lavishly mounted, monumental play is a human story brimming with love, jealousy, rebellion, sacrifice and an ever-relevant message, “Dilwale ka saath dena, daulat wale ka nahin.” In the end, Salim and Anarkali’s passion remains unwavering, making their story one of the most beloved romances in Indian cinema and theatre.
