The first half of the program presents two dark operatic heroes at sea: a Dutchman under a terrible curse and an Englishman fighting terrible demons. In both cases, the stormy sea is where their respective dramas unfold.
After so much turmoil, Beethoven’s Seventh will come as the happy ending we all crave: here the clouds are dispelled and we are invited to a joyful celebration (in the words of the composer of The Flying Dutchman, the “apotheosis of the dance”).
