Mahler’s Fifth is an epic journey that begins with a funeral march, endures turmoil, dances with abandon, confesses deep love, and ends finally in glory. It is a great testament to adversity surmounted, expressed in luxuriant orchestral colors and unforgettable melodies.
The stage is set with an orchestral version of Bach’s Chaconne (originally for solo violin), in which a brief musical idea undergoes a series of transformations to become a statement of monumental proportion.
