When the scheduled soloist took ill last season, violinist Mayuko Kamio stepped in as a substitute… and departed a sensation. Listeners were enthralled; reviews were ecstatic. She plays Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto: heartfelt, melody-filled and technically daunting — an ideal showcase for an astonishing artist. The evening’s first half contrasts Mozart’s “most perfect and popular” serenade with Stravinsky’s edgy experiment in the elegant style of Mozart’s 18th century.
