SAN JOSE, CA — Opera San José has announced that the company’s 2019-20 season at the California Theatre will open September 14, 2019. It will feature Die Fledermaus, Hansel and Gretel, Il trovatore and The Magic Flute. For the season opener, Die Fledermaus, Michael Morgan, Music Director of Festival Opera in Walnut Creek, will conduct Johann Strauss’s seductive series of waltzes and polkas, effervescent arias and dizzying, sentimental ensembles.
“We will have particularly brilliant sets and costumes, and Marc Jacobs will return to direct this production, which was highly appreciated in 2012,” said General Director Larry Hancock. “Fledermaus is a double dose of good cheer, thanks to the sparkle of excellent champagne and a vintage, masterful operetta.”
Next, the company will mount Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, with its rich score inspired by the sophisticated orchestrations of Wagner. Director Joseph Marcheso will conduct this, one of his favorite scores, and Layna Chianakas will direct.
According to Hancock, “This is the perfect work to introduce little ones to opera, because the sophisticated music is also satisfying for adult palates. A not-very-scary tale of two children overcoming a bumbling witch and freeing all the gingerbread children from her fearful spell is captivating, and children will be especially attentive as they see other children on stage as angels and gingerbread cookies. Of course, the singing will be captivating for everyone.”
Verdi’s Il trovatore has long been a staple of opera houses all over the world, and Opera San José has produced it only rarely, as it requires rare voices. A cast of accomplished artists will sing under Music Director Joseph Marcheso’s baton and be directed by Brad Dalton.
Mozart’s fairy-book opera The Magic Flute — complete with dragon and forest creatures, an evil queen and saintly father figure — will bring the season to a close. Stage direction by Brad Dalton will ensure clear and affecting acting, and conductor Donato Cabrera, making his Opera San José debut, will conduct this classic score, Mozart’s most popular opera.
“Featuring an enormous cast and truly unique sets and costumes, this Magic Flute will provide an uplifting close to a season we hope will bring you lasting memories of meaningful theatrical and musical experiences,” General Director Larry Hancock said.
