Pianist Jon Kimura Parker is famed for his “infectious elan and gargantuan technique.” His out-sized technique will be on special demand for the first work, a concerto build on a heroic symphonic scale that requires sheer stamina as well as supreme artistry. A masterpiece of musical contrasts, it is also filled with lyrical interludes, including an extended cello solo.
Dvořák’s symphony follows, inventive but gentler, almost idyllic, and irresistibly tuneful. While he wrote it, Dvořák himself marveled “melodies simply pour out of me.”
