Variations have been part of the composer’s tool kit throughout musical history. This program showcases three examples from different times and countries that illustrate the enormous appeal of these musical transformations.
Brahms’ masterful variations on Haydn’s beautiful theme set the standard; Ginastera gives his an Argentine flavor; and Elgar’s instantly popular Enigma Variations established him overnight as one of the best English composers in two hundred years.
As a special bonus, this concert also features Alma Deutscher, the extraordinary young musical prodigy championed by mentor Zubin Mehta, performing her own violin concerto.
