Lyric Theatre opens its 2015-2016 season with this comedic classic.
Frederic, apprenticed by mistake to a pirate band, comes of age and decides it is his duty to devote the rest of his life to exterminating his former friends. However, this is no ordinary pirate band. They spare orphans, so of course everyone they capture pleads “orphan,” including Major General Stanley on behalf of his daughters.
When the pirates learn the truth, they swear revenge. Will they be successful?
The Pirates of Penzance is one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular works. Joseph Papp restaged it as a Broadway musical in 1980 featuring Linda Ronstadt and Kevin Kline. The Major General’s song has been parodied many times, perhaps most notably in Tom Lehrer’s “The Elements.”
